What is Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten?

welcome to prek Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is a FREE state program designed to prepare every child in Florida for kindergarten and build the foundation for their educational success. All age eligible children are entitled to participate. The VPK mission is to ensure that all children are intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically ready to enter school and are ready to learn, fully recognizing the crucial role of parents and caregivers as their child’s first teacher.

School Year VPK

florida vpk logoFull day VPK (540 hours) will be offered at Dodgertown Elementary, Fellsmere Elementary, Glendale Elementary, Indian River Academy, Pelican Island Elementary and Vero Beach ElementaryYour child must be 4 years old on or before September 1. If more families are interested than slots available, the slots will be filled through a computer generated random selection process (lottery).


SUMMER VPK

kids jumping summerSummer VPK is a 300 hour program offered for 6 weeks in June and July. This program will be offered on two school sites; one in North County and one in South County. You may choose which site is most convenient for your family. To be eligible for the Summer VPK program, your child must be 5 years old on or before September 1 and did NOT complete a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten during the school year.

HOW TO APPLY

it matters to this one quoteStep 1: Obtain a VPK Certificate of Eligibility: Complete the online registration process at: Early Learning Family Portal You will need (A) a valid email address (B) a copy or photo of your child’s birth certificate and (C) a copy or photo of one proof of address to upload. The Early Learning Coalition office (located at 2459 St. Lucie Ave (14th Ave) Vero Beach, 32960) has computers available for families who may not have a computer or smart phone. Please call 1.877.220.1223 for more information.

Step 2: Bring ALL required documents to the Pre-K Office and complete an application (between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm).

  • Call Ellen McDonald @ 772.564.4166 to check that staff will be available before coming to the Pre-K office
  • ALL required documents:
    • Valid VPK Certificate of Eligibility
    • Child’s Birth Certificate
    • Proof of Residency (a bill for a service you receive in your name at your current address for example: water, cable/satellite, electricity, trash collection)
    • Child’s Social Security Card (requested but not required)
For the 2019-2020 School Year, applications will be accepted beginning January 14, 2019 and ending April 12, 2019 at the Pre-K office between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. The Early Learning Family Portal will open for 2019-2020 Certificate of Eligibility applications beginning January 1, 2019.

  • Travel North on 58th Avenue from Route 60/ 20th Street (3.9 miles)
  • Left turn at Traffic light on to 57th Street (Note Vero Lago and Bent Pine Golf Course on east corners of 57th Street)
  • Proceed .5 (half mile) on 57th Street to 62nd Avenue
  • Turn right onto 62nd Avenue – head north
  • Proceed north pass Storm Grove Middle School
  • Support Services Complex on the left
  • Enter north parking lot (North side of building) (Sign Visitor Parking on left)
  • Enter building by flag pole
  • Room 1-402 right side (note: chairs outside of office)

From Rt. 60: 

  • Travel South on 66th Avenue from Route 510
  • Left turn at Traffic light on to 57th Street – Proceed past District J. A. Thompson Administration building on left, and continue East pass Storm Grove Middle School
  • Left turn on to 62nd Avenue – heading north
  • Proceed north pass Storm Grove Middle School
  • Support Services Complex on the left
  • Enter north parking lot (North side of building) – there is a sign Visitor Parking
