VERO BEACH, FL (September 29, 2026) - The School Board of Indian River County has opened its search for the next Superintendent of Schools, inviting exceptional educational leaders to consider an opportunity to build upon the District’s sustained progress while helping shape its future. A Community Survey also opens today, giving students, families, employees, and community members an opportunity to share what they believe matters most in SDIRC’s next leader.
Both the survey and the application period run through October 26, 2026. The survey, qualifications, application instructions, and full search timeline are available on the District’s Superintendent Search webpage.
The search follows Superintendent Dr. David K. Moore’s announcement that he will conclude his service effective June 30, 2027. His nearly seven years of leadership have been marked by significant academic improvement and the development of systems, relationships, and leadership capacity that position the School District of Indian River County for continued excellence.
A District Ready for Its Next Chapter
SDIRC serves more than 14,000 students across Vero Beach, Sebastian, Fellsmere, and surrounding communities. More than 1,800 instructional and District support employees work alongside families and community partners to help students reach their full potential. As Indian River County’s largest employer, the District is deeply connected to the life and future of the community it serves.
That collective work has produced four consecutive A district grades. Every district-operated school earned an A or B, with 23 of the District’s 24 traditional public schools earning an A. Student achievement now exceeds performance before the pandemic across nearly every assessed area, and graduation outcomes remain among the highest in Florida. The District has also expanded educational choices for families.
These results tell part of the story. Behind them are teachers, school leaders, support professionals, students, families, and partners who have built a culture of high expectations, shared accountability, and belief in what every child can achieve.
The next Superintendent will inherit that strength and the responsibility to carry it forward. The School Board seeks a leader who will understand the District’s people and established ways of work, sustain what is producing results, strengthen what can be improved, and guide thoughtful innovation in response to the changing needs of students and the community. Priorities include academic growth and literacy, leadership development, fiscal responsibility, strong community relationships, and clear, transparent communication.
The opportunity is to lead a District that is Connected by Community, Fueled by Innovation, and Driven by Leadership.
Your Voice Matters
Selecting the next Superintendent is one of the School Board’s most important responsibilities. Through the Community Survey, students, families, employees, and community members can share the experience, leadership qualities, and priorities they believe are most important in the District’s next leader.
Survey feedback will be provided to School Board members as they review candidates and plan for the District’s future. The survey is open now through October 26, 2026. Additional opportunities for public participation will be posted on the Superintendent Search webpage as they become available.
A Public Search Process
Applications for the Superintendent of Schools position opened today. Qualified candidates must submit a complete application and all required materials by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Under the current timeline, School Board members will receive candidate materials and community survey feedback on October 27. Applications received by the deadline are scheduled to be posted with the agenda for the Board’s November 17 public workshop, where the Board will review qualifying candidates and determine who advances to interviews.
Finalists are scheduled to tour District schools and the community on December 13. On December 14, they will participate in public interviews, individual interviews with School Board members, and presentations of their 90 Day Plans. The Board is scheduled to select a preferred candidate during a Special School Board Business Meeting that evening. Contract negotiations and Board consideration of a final contract will follow. The timeline is subject to change at the direction of the School Board.
Throughout the search, the District will publish meeting information, candidate materials, participation opportunities, and updates at Selecting Our Next Superintendent.
The District’s progress has never belonged to one person. It has been built by people working together, learning together, and holding fast to the belief that every student can succeed. Their perspectives will help the School Board choose the leader who carries that work into its next chapter.
