What is PBIS?
Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, kids learn about behavior, just as they learn other subjects like math or science. The key to PBIS is prevention, not punishment.
The Principles of PBIS
PBIS is the approach that our school uses to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. It’s also a way for our school to decide how to respond to a child who misbehaves.
PBIS has a few important principles:
- Every child can learn proper behavior.
- Stepping in early can prevent more serious behavior problems.
- Each child is different and schools need to provide many kinds of behavior support.
- How schools teach behavior should be based on research and science.
- Following a child’s behavioral progress is important.
- Schools must gather and use data to make decisions about behavior problems.
At VBE or little Indians learn about what behaviors are appropriate, just like they learn Math or Science. Students are taught social skills, including how to act in different settings, such as the classroom, on the bus or with friends. They may learn through role-playing or through actual lessons. Staff at the school regularly praiseand reinforcegood behavior.
Mission Statement: At Vero Beach Elementary School, we are Valuable Believers in Education who empower students to be college, career, and community ready through rigorous and relevant instruction tasks which inspire critical thinking, independent problem-solving, and stimulate natural curiosity. We build relationships as a collaborative community of environmentally conscious, lifelong learners who value and respect themselves, pursue academic excellence with vigor, and contribute positively to the world around them.
Vision: At Vero Beach Elementary, we believe we must:
- Value Respect
- Inspire Others
- Be Responsible
- Exercise Safety
We celebrate our diverse culture and encourage our families to strengthen the bonds of collaboration by facilitating monthly events that focus on character building, academic achievement, and life-long learning. We build upon this by visually representing the diversity of our students with large canvas photography spread evenly across our campus.
We want to create an environment where students feel safe and respected. With our Vision, that we refer to as our “VIBE” we have implemented school-wide expectations which are delivered through assemblies, digital reminders, daily morning announcements, posters in the hallways and through continuous staff encouragement.
We have implemented a Positive Behavior Support System (PBS). Students are encouraged to follow the VIBE expectations. Their appropriate behaviors, acts of kindness and positive communication skills are rewards with Wampums.
Research has shown that introducing, modeling and reinforcing positive social behaviors is of major importance to a student’s educational experience and success. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them establishes a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
Our PBS Title One Teachers and our Behavior Intervention Specialist did a school wide classroom by classroom anti-bullying presentations with the PBIS message of stop, walk, talk. These presentations gave students and teachers a step by step process of reporting any incidents that make them uncomfortable or that they may perceive to be bullying.
We have a PBS Team. We will be regularly to continue to develop and monitor our PBS system. Staff will receive training to help promote the PBS model.

The Zen Zone:
There’s a new space on campus at VBE that’s making student life a little easier. Our Fifth grade students in the Project Based Learning program worked very hard this year to design and create the Zen Room, a wonder place for all tostretch, do yoga and practice deep breathing. More important, in the Zen Room, students build an ability to be mindful and calm. This new space was designed by our 5thgraders through research, and based on feedback and data they collected on spaces that would help them relax, de-stress and take care of themselves while they’re on campus. Some of the elements they included in our Zen Room are:
- Dimmed lights to ease or prevent symptoms of anxiety
- Blue calming walls
- Blankets and stuffed animals
- Lavender plants for a calming soothing effect
- Bean bag chairs
- Round tables for group sessions
- a whiteboard wall for creative expression
- a smaller whiteboard for motivational quotes
- games and puzzles
- A large rug for Mindful meditation
