Vero Beach, FL, August 23, 2017– The Superintendent’s workshop on August 22, 2017 included a presentation by the School Start Time Committee on research and data regarding potential future school start times.

The School Start Time Committee was convened by the district in an effort to ensure that we are taking a comprehensive approach to real improvement in learning in our classrooms.  Several months ago, a committee was formed to research our current school start and finish times (start of the day – finish of the day).  The committee is made up of parents, teachers, school administrators, physicians, and community partners – such as the Boys and Girls Club and the Gifford Youth Achievement Center.  Research was presented that indicates appropriate school start times based on a student’s age.  For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools delay the start time of classes to 8:30am or later.  The School Start Time committee reviewed research, considered what other districts are doing, and explored possible changes to our school day start and finish times.

The committee created several different proposed school day start and finish schedules and then conducted an online survey to get feedback from the community.  The committee presented the Board members with a summary of their work and gave the board a recommended new school day start and finish schedule.  The school start time committee recommendation is one of many factors that will be used to determine the path going forward.  We recognize that this is a complicated and important decision that will affect all families in our community.  Parent and community feedback is important in making this decision, therefore, we ask that you review the presentation and take the survey that is available on our district website, www.indianriverschools.org.

At this time, there is no proposal before the Board, and the Board is not considering any changes, just gathering information.  If the Board decides to approve a change, it would not be until next school year (2018-2019).
