Reading Scholarships

Reading Scholarship Accounts

What are Reading Scholarship Accounts?

The Reading Scholarship is administered by Step Up For Students and was created to help students in third through fifth grade who struggle with reading. The program offers parents access to education savings accounts to pay for tuition and fees related to reading support.

Who is eligible?

Students in grades 3 through 5 who are enrolled in a Florida public school and scored below a Level 3 on the grade 3 or grade 4 statewide, standardized English Language Arts assessment in the prior school year are eligible to apply for a Reading Scholarship Account.

How do I apply?

To apply for funding, a parent must submit an application to an eligible scholarship funding organization directly.  For the 2019-20 school year, Step Up For Students will be the only Scholarship Funding Organization administering this scholarship program.

What can I use the funds for?

The eligible expenditures for reimbursement are:

  • Instructional materials;
  • curriculum;
  • tuition and fees for part-time tutoring services;
  • fees for specialized summer education programs designed to improve reading or literacy skills; and
  • fees for after-school education programs designed to improve reading or literacy skills.
