Glitter Jar

We all need help managing stress from time to time! Glitter Jars (idea credit to Parents Magazine March 2019) fun and calming for children, teens and adults!

Pour some glitter (finer glitter tends to float longer which is helpful) into a clear jar with a lid such as a mason jar, pour water into the jar, and seal the lid with glue to prevent leaks. *Pro tip: squeezing some glitter glue or regular glue into the jar before sealing will also prolong the effect.

When your child is calm, create the glitter jar together. Use the jar as a metaphor for their feelings. Give it a good shake and discuss how this "glitter storm" represents swirling emotions when we are upset. Watch the glitter settle together while taking some big deep breaths. Discuss how when the glitter settles and the water is clear again, that represents our minds when we are calm and able to think clearly. There is something soothing about watching the glitter jar, similar to a snow globe.
