Attendance/social work staff responds to attendance and truancy referrals following school district policies, procedures and established law. Reasons for attendance and truancy issues are assessed and a plan of action is developed to improve attendance. This process includes home visits, conferencing with family and teachers, and participation in the school Student Support Team. Referrals and networking with community agencies are also conducted to identify prevention and remedial interventions for students. Staff assists with expulsion reviews, truancy court proceedings and analyzing enrollment and attendance data.

esol logoThe primary goal of the ESOL program is to develop as effectively and efficiently as possible, each child's English language proficiency and academic potential. It should also provide positive reinforcement of the self-image and esteem of participating students, promote cross-cultural understanding, and provide equal educational opportunities.

mentors1 mentors2

The Vero Beach High School (VBHS) mentor program is designed for English Language Learners (ELLs) that are in second grade at Vero Beach Elementary.  This program has been a yearly occurrence for the last five years.  The high school student-mentors team up with a second grader for at least a semester, with most students committing to mentor for the full year.  On a weekly basis, they work on reading, math and language skills together.  The goal is to help VBE students master grade level material so that they are better prepared for 3rd grade.  The main idea is to have a one-on-one tutor/mentor that invests in the life of a younger student.  VBE students ask whole-heartedly, “When do I get to see my high schooler?”  The joy when they see their friend/mentor walk in is well worth keeping this program alive.

Vero Beach Elementary Audubon Advocates Club is an outdoor conservation club that is sponsored by the Pelican Island Audubon Society.  Using their guiding question, “What can we do to preserve and protect our Lagoon through advocacy, education, and public awareness?”, students from VBE work on developing methods of environmental sustainability. This program helps students develop effective teamwork methods as they work together to learn and understand science standards on a practical level. Pictures depict examples of teamwork during Kayak Day as students unload the kayaks into the Indian River Lagoon and learn to paddle out effectively in pairs. Students also observe the turbidity of the water, discuss differences between the lagoon water in comparison to tap water, and investigate the surrounding nature.
