FLDOE Releases School And District Grades For 2017-2018 School Year

Vero Beach, FL, June 27, 2018— The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has released school and district grades for the 2017-2018 school year. Dr. Rendell, School District of Indian River County Superintendent, said, “As a district, we did show improvement overall, earning a “B,” and missing an “A”
by just 2 percentage points. We applaud the hard work and dedication of our teachers and the efforts put forth by our students. These results tell part of the story, but are just one measure of our success. We have many reasons to celebrate, as several schools increased their grades; however, we also have some opportunities for improvement.”

Nine schools increased their letter grade, with one of those schools increasing two letter grades in one year. Liberty Magnet Elementary School, Indian River Charter High School, and North County Charter Elementary School all increased their letter grade from a “B” to an “A.” Vero Beach High School, Sebastian River High School, Gifford Middle School, and Sebastian Elementary School increased from a “C” to a “B,” and Oslo Middle School increased from a “D” to a “C.” St. Peter’s Academy increased two letter grades from a “C” to an “A.”

Mrs. Letitia Whitfield-Hart, Principal at Sebastian Elementary School, responded to her school’s grade, saying, “I am so proud of our students, teachers, staff, and parents at ‘The Nest.’ This grade was truly a team effort!! I am a proud Principal!”

Ms. Tosha Jones, Principal at Gifford Middle School, (GMS) said, “I am so proud of the students and staff at GMS. Our Motto this year was ‘Together We Make Our School a Success.’ This was a great year for us, and it shows with our improved academic success. We will continue to push ourselves and our students on this positive momentum of improved student achievement; with the support of our GMS families and generous community/business partners, Gifford Middle School will remain a top academic institution.”

Mr. Todd Racine, former Principal at Sebastian River High School, (SRHS) stated, “Congratulations to the students and staff at SRHS for earning the grade of “B” from the FLDOE. Collaboration and Progress Monitoring were the keys to our grade increase. In Professional Learning Communities, our teachers planned lessons and assessed student data to identify areas of focus in their daily instruction. We also saw an increase in student participation in our after school and weekend programs designed to assist student achievement. Those efforts proved to pay great dividends for Shark Nation. I applaud the effort and commitment from our entire school staff. ‘You Can't Hide That Shark Pride.’ "

Mr. Shawn O’Keefe, Principal at Vero Beach High School, said, “We are very proud of the level of success that is represented by our "B" school grade. Congratulations to our students, teachers, staff, and families for their hard work and achievement. Way to go Vero!”

Five schools received a lower letter grade. Rosewood Magnet Elementary School dropped from an “A” to a “B.” Glendale Elementary School and Storm Grove Middle School dropped from a “B” to a “C” and Vero Beach Elementary School dropped from a “C” to a “D.” Beachland Elementary School dropped two letter grades from an “A” to a “C.”

All other schools maintained their previous year’s letter grade. The school grades, district grades, and school improvement ratings, along with the guides to calculations, can be found at: http://www.fldoe.org/accountability/accountability-reporting/school-grades/

The District will be incorporating this newly released data into the locally developed School Report Cards, which will be posted on the District’s web page at www.indianriverschools.org by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, June 28, 2018.
