On Saturday November 5, 2016 Citrus Elementary's Project Unify Basketball Team participated in a 2 game scrimmage in Tavares, Florida. Our team was amazing as always and showed why they are a conduit for change and inclusion in our school, the community and now our state. We had the privilege of competing against Tavares Middle School at The Big House. Our athletes and partners were involved in a very physical game and were able to end game one with a 31 to 31 tie! Terry P. and Elijah A. played offensively with 12 points each in game one. Ethan S. scored 8 points and Anthony C. scored 4 points in the two games as well. Citrus' Project Unify Basketball Team won game two against the same team 26 to 16.
On defense we had the pleasure of watching Carter T. provide some much needed defense that all but stopped the offensive attack of the other team. Audiyonna J., Edy D., and Briley B. provided excellent support and coverage on defense as well. One player that had success on both sides of the game was Donquaill W. He scored a three point shot, several clutch shots that changed the momentum of the game, and he also put on a great high pressure defensive game. Coach James Broxton and Coach Marisa Campbell coached the team to another hard won victory. Morgan Chasteen and Lori Nelson, two of our teacher assistants provided support for all of our students on the trip. Mr. Teske and his entire family were in attendance supporting our time along with Mr. Dowd and Mr. Carter. We missed one of our athletes who was out sick and unable to compete on Saturday but Houston C. was in our thoughts all day.
We will be competing in area competition on December 4, 2016 at Sebastian River High School from 3 to 5 pm. Citrus' Project Unify Basketball Team will also compete on January 8, 2016 at Nova Southeastern College in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The team will also compete at the state level competition on January 27 and 28 at the Big House in Tavares, FL.
