Mrs. Clement's 5th grade students enjoyed making paper roller coasters for their force and motion unit. Teams had to figure the cost to build and try to build their coaster the cheapest way possible and still get the most points. Teams were given specifications as to how to earn points.  Example: 1 point for each second the marble rolled on the track, points for height, length of track, number of turns and curves etc. The teams were given one roll of scotch tape, one roll of masking tape and the same number of track pieces made out of card stock. They had to design the coaster, cut and assemble the pieces to create a working coaster, present their project to the class and discuss their successes and failures and how their designs changed through the building process.
