Welcome to Sebastian Elementary School, an 8 year Florida A+ School!  We look forward to working with approximately 565 PK-5th grade families and 70 faculty/staff members during the 2009-2010 school year.

Our school is unique in the variety of programs we offer our learners.  We have: 1.) Single Year Programs (SYP) in which students study with a particular teacher for one year.  2.) Multi Year Programs (MYP) in which students study with a particular teacher for more than one year (Loop).  3.)  Multi-Age Programs (MAP) in which students from two grade levels study with a particular teacher for two years.  The (MAP) teacher integrates instruction across a two year curriculum (K/1, 2/3, 4/5).  4.) Project C.H.I.L.D. which teams three teachers with three groups of students for a three year period (K,1,2 and 3,4,5).  Each teacher specializes in two academic areas:  Reading/Language Arts, Math/Science, or Writing/Social Studies.  5.) Exceptional Student Education (ESE) in which students are supported through a broad array of models to insure they are learning in their least restrictive environment:  full inclusion, support facilitation, push-in/pull-out resource, and self-contained.

Our stellar faculty boasts ten (12) National Board Certified Teachers, twenty-four (24) INTEL trained, two (2) INTEL Master Trainers, Indian River County’s 2008 Teacher of the Year. Our teachers were awarded five (5) grants from the Education Foundation of Indian River County in 2008 including the $30,000 Greatest Idea Grant for handheld PC technology which will enrich learning resources in 2009. In addition this 2009 year our Reading Coach received a $500.00 Education Foundation Grant to support our Response to Intervention  Implementation.

We continue to maintain our recognition as a State of Florida Model Positive Behavior Support School teaching, reminding, and reinforcing our school-wide expectations essential pieces of a safe, focused, climate where student achievement flourishes.  Our Action Plan will be augmented through 2008 professional development that focused on “Conscious Discipline” – creating classroom connections with students; “Beating the Odds” – creating family and community connections; “Bully Prevention” – creating a climate of empathy and tolerance.

We will continue our focus on developing “Healthy Habits” by embracing our District Wellness Policy and implementing the “Fresh Fruit and Vegetable” Grant which will provide our students with healthy snacks daily!  We will also insure that our students receive daily 30 minute periods of physical activity another building block in establishing healthy, lifelong, lifestyles.

We are also very excited this year to welcome the Mardy Fish Foundation , who will be providing funding to us that will allow us to offer after-school clubs for our little “Sea Turtles.”

We will continue our efforts to conserve our natural resources by minimizing copy contracts and paper consumption.  A $6,000.00 savings in 2008 has been redirected to support Reading Instruction in 2009 as a result of our efforts.  Visit www.indianriverschools.org daily to access our school web-pages and school calendar, general information, classroom, PTA, SAC, Food Service, student podcasts and photo gallery of our exciting life here at “The Nest.” You will also find a monthly Principal’s newsletter with communication regarding events and things happening here at “The Nest”.

Peace*Love*Turtles!
