Located in rural Indian River County, Fellsmere Elementary School serves Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students from the city of Fellsmere. Fellsmere is a unique community consisting of single family dwellings, mobile homes, and two large apartment complexes inhabited primarily by low income families.
Fellsmere Elementary has a diverse population of 93% Hispanic, 5% Caucasian, 1% African American, and 1% Multi-ethnic students. Ninety-five percent of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Until recently, over half of Fellsmere's students were children of Hispanic migrant workers. As a result, Fellsmere Elementary had an extremely high mobility rate. During the past few years, however, a growing segment of this population has stabilizied and now resides in the community year round.
A large majority of the student population at Fellsmere Elementary are English As a Second Languange (ESL) students. Spanish is the language of choice almost everywhere in the community as well as in the home. During the school day, however, our students communicate in English.
